Budget committee approves pay bumps for state employees

The Joint Committee on Finance approved on Tuesday 2 percent pay increases in 2020 and 2021 for state workers, including UW System employees.

The first of the increases would kick in Jan. 1, 2020, with the second coming a year later. Governor Tony Evers also proposed a 2 percent increase in each year.

UW System President Ray Cross tweeted that the JFC’s proposal will help System schools attract and retain talent.

The committee has yet to take up the higher education or capital budget portions of the budget. After a budget bill is approved by the committee, it will need to be approved by both houses of the state legislature and Evers before it becomes law.
